Phirex Australia has conducted considerable fire testing at recognised independent Research & Fire Testing Laboratories around the world to demonstrate the efficacy of its MISTEX® and FOGEX® water mist fire protection systems. These fire protection systems use atomised water mist droplets to extinguish fires and provide an efficient, reliable, safe and cost effective alternative to traditional fire extinguishing methods.

The FOGEX and MISTEX fire protection systems are widely used in Australia and overseas for marine, land and offshore applications.

MSC/Circ 668/728 & 1165 and MSC/Circ. 913 Fire Testing

The FOGEX water fog fire protection system is a state-of-the-art fire extinguishing system using high pressure to achieve fog formation to combat fires. FOGEX has been tested in accordance with IMO Guidelines MSC/Circ. 668/728 and MSC/Circ. 1165 for use in machinery spaces and cargo pump rooms (for installation up to 4,000 cu. metres), and as per Factory Mutual machinery spaces, combustion and gas turbines and special hazard machinery spaces for enclosures >260 cu. metres.

For total flooding concept Fogex F20 open deluge water mist nozzles were tested having a flow rate of only 6.4LPM at 100 bar pressure. Nozzles were installed at 10 metres ceiling height which was the practicable limit available at the VTT fire test hall. All test fires were successfully extinguished.

Local application fire testing was conducted at VTT Building and Transport – independent fire testing and research laboratories in Finland with Fogex nozzles up to 11.1 metres above floor level. All test fires were extinguished within very narrow time frames.

All above fire tests were witnessed by authorities like Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, Finnish Maritime Directorate and Underwriters Laboratories.

All 1.0 megawatt and 6.0 megawatt diesel spray fires were extinguished within a narrow time interval ranging from just 4-seconds and up to 29-seconds. Nozzle heights were 2.0 metres minimum distance from the fire source and up to 10.1 metres from the fire source. The FOGEX F11 nozzles demonstrated their superior fire fighting efficiency using only 10.0 litres water each at 100 bar operating pressure. FOGEX nozzle grid spacing is 4.0 m x 4.0 m.

LESS IS BEST – FOGEX NOZZLES USE LEAST AMOUT OF WATER.

The FOGEX F20, F27 and F11 nozzles have all been IMO tested. FOGEX F20 nozzles flow just 6.4 litres per minute at 100-bar pressure, FOGEX F11 deliver 10 litres per minute and the FOGEX F27 door screen nozzles flow just 5.3 litres per minute at 100-bar pressure.

These are very minute amounts of water to accomplish fire extinguishment for the severe and challenging fire tests. For marine approvals, the system operating pressure is 110-120 bar and for land approvals the system operating pressure is 100-bar.
